France no longer has any Oak trees large enough to repair Notre Dame and so several estates in the UK have volunteered to fell their ancient Oak trees and donate them for the repair.
“So far more than one hundred donor estates, including Belvoir Castle, Hutton-in-the-Forest, Scone Palace, Castle Howard, Holkham Hall, Powderham Castle, and Firle Place (named after the Anglo-Saxon word for ‘oak woodland’), have volunteered valuable trees, planted for timber centuries ago, as a gift from the UK to France for the restoration of the iconic landmark’s roof, destroyed by fire earlier this week.” –https://www.historichouses.org
In the face of severe climate change, we must not do this! We must protect our ancient Oak trees!
Rewilding and maintaining our forests is our most powerful weapon against climate change – we cannot afford to lose these trees. It takes 100s of year to grow an oak tree – we cannot lose our mature forests!
They plan to replant 3 saplings for each mature oak that they fell. But three saplings will not sequester as much as one might Oak and we only have 11 years to halt catastrophic climate change!
PLEASE DONT DO THIS! We understand that Notre Dame is beautiful and it would be amazing to repair it but humankind NEEDS THOSE TREES MORE THAN A NICE BUILDING!!!
